The National Congress of Black Women – Greater Detroit Chapter is continuing its mission to be a proactive voice in the discussion to improve education in Detroit. On Thursday, June 7, 2012 from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. we are co-sponsoring with The Michigan Chronicle an Education Town Hall Meeting, “Dismantling by Design”. The town hall will be held at the Michigan State University (MSU) Detroit Center, 3408 Woodward Avenue at Erskine (between Mack and Temple), Detroit, MI 48201-2726.

The town hall will feature two panel discussions designed to:

Provide an overview of research data identifying barriers to student success in the city of Detroit
Provide an update on State of Michigan education policies that impact K-12 and higher education
Analyze the current state of Detroit Public Schools, the State of Michigan’s Educational Achievement System, charter schools and inner ring suburban schools serving Detroit students.

Michigan Chronicle editor Bankole Thompson will moderate the panels. U.S. Representatives John Conyers, Jr. and Hansen Clarke are honorary co-chairs for the event. Confirmed speakers for the panels include Detroit School Board Member Elena Herrada, education activist Helen Moore, Black Family Development CEO Alice Thompson, State Representative Thomas Stallworth, NCBW Education Chair and State Representative District 8 candidate Sherry Gay-Dagnogo and NCBW Policy Chair and Wayne State University Board of Governors candidate Kim Trent, and Harold Kwalwasser, former general counsel of the Los Angeles Unified School District, consultant on education policy, and Author “Renewal: Remaking America’s Schools for the Twenty-First Century”. Panelists will offer their frank assessments of current local educational conditions and offer prescriptions for improving student achievement in Detroit.

The success of our children will only be realized when we step up and ensure that positive change occurs. We hope that you will be able to join us and we encourage you to invite others to attend. I look forward to seeing you there!
