A 3-week-old baby was mauled to death by a 2-year-old pit bull (pictured above) on Detroit’s west side Thursday evening, the Detroit Free Press reports. Neither the baby nor her parents has been named at this point.
Local police say that the mother went to a home and took the infant inside with her. She placed the baby, still strapped in her car seat, on the floor. The mother reportedly did not know that there was a dog running loose inside of the home.
The mother stepped away briefly. But when she returned, she saw a pit bull mauling her baby. They rushed her to a local hospital, but she died of her injuries. Investigators were on the scene snapping photos and collecting evidence. But prosecutors, at this point, are not pursuing criminal charges.

According to Dogbite.org, 65 percent of those who have been “maimed or killed by pit bulls during the past 30 years have occurred during the past 10 years.”
