Detroit mayoral candidate Duggan quits EAA board

DETROIT (WJBK) – Rev. Charles Williams from the National Action Network is questioning millions of dollars in loans from Detroit Public Schools to the Education Achievement Authority.

“Now we are starting to see public school money, Detroit public school money, pay for a pet project of Governor Snyder,” Williams remarked.

Dollars that Wiliams says Detroit’s cash-strapped district should not be loaning to the EAA.

“They put this school system in place that has no democracy, no school board attached to it, no public input,” Williams stated.

Mayoral candidate Mike Duggan and outgoing DPS Emergency Manager Roy Roberts were both on the board of the Education Achievement Authority.  Duggan, who served as secretary, just resigned reportedly to keep the EAA out of a heated mayoral battle.

“We are calling on Mike Duggan and Roy Roberts to speak up and tell the truth about where our money is going and what they are doing to our money,” Williams said.  “Mike Duggan should speak out and should be transparent.  If he wants to be our mayor, he should be transparent.”

We contacted Duggan’s spokesperson and requested an interview, but he declined.

Roberts was out of town, but Snyder addressed the loans.

“That was a startup situation where there were certain cash flow issues that were addressed.  They’re being worked out.  They’re being paid back in the normal course of things, and we’re just going to keep moving ahead,” he said.

Snyder, who was touring Detroit schools with U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, said they are also moving to appoint a new emergency manager to replace Roberts.

“Roy’s done a lot of wonderful work in Detroit Public Schools.  So what I’d say to anyone looking at this situation is we want to have some continuity and stability to a lot of the reforms they’ve done and to see them continue because we’re on a good path there,” the governor said.
