Detroit police use crime stats to target hot spots for violence

(WJBK) - Detroit’s Police Chief James Craig was on the job Saturday night. An uptick in shootings has police cracking down in crime ridden neighborhoods. The department is using statistics to target problem areas.

“There’s an expectation that when you go to a gas station or stop at a local store you have an expectation of being safe and getting home, not being held up at gun point and maybe shot,” Chief Craig told Fox 2. “Something is wrong with that. That is not how life should be.”

The chief says while homicides are down, non fatal shootings are up 2% from last year. The department is not revealing its entire strategy, but the chief is warning criminals they will be caught and prosecuted. Craig spent his Saturday night with officers on the street.

“It’s somewhat inspiring,” said Sgt. Diaz Graves. “It’s not a common thing for the chief of police to be out here on the front lines with us and he’s been doing it on a regular basis it seems.”

Chief Craig believes boosting morale will help sink crime. He says there were only two shootings Friday night and he hopes the trend will continue. He’s preparing to launch a new tactical services unit and gang squad to further reduce crime.
