Campaign Underway to Identify Women Who Need Custom Made Breast Prostheses

Layer-walk-30In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness month, AugMe Foundation International, a non-profit organization, is holding a fundraiser at Accessories by Stephanie, a women’s boutique located at The Lakes Medical Center in West Bloomfield. The spectacular fall sales event will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2013. It will feature a beautiful selection of jewelry, clothing and a variety of fashionable accessories from around the world, including a unique collection of contemporary winter gloves, hats scarves and handbags.

AugMe Foundation International was founded in April 2009  by the late Dawn Spencer, a well-known Metro Detroit Media Sales Executive who battled with three bouts of breast cancer over a seven year period. Her daughter, Brooke Spencer Trotter, M.D.works as a Radiation Oncologist at St. John Providence Health System. She serves as Executive Director of AugMe. Her goal is to preserve Dawn’s legacy while by continuing to educate women about breast cancer prevention and treatment while also providing the help that many survivors need after undergoing mastectomies.

“Many of the women who undergo mastectomy are uninsured or underinsured. We find that a lot of insurance companies will not pay for customized breast prostheses and this is where AugMe can help by donating prostheses to the women in need”.

Stephanie Oram, who owns two boutiques in West Bloomfield, has a special passion for women who have undergone breast cancer surgery and the grueling treatments. One of her stores is located inside West Bloomfield’s Henry Ford Hospital where she has met hundreds of women who talk to her about their experience with breast cancer. It is her second AugMe fundraiser. “I love working with organizations that help these women. They need to know that they are not alone and that there are people and places that they can reach out to for help without feeling embarrassed”.
