According to Yahoo Sports Adrian Wojnarowski, Mo Cheeks has been fired as head coach of the Detroit Pistons. Wojnarowksi of Yahoo Sports was the first to break the news and other media outlets like ESPN would soon follow:
Yahoo Sports added that Cheeks was informed on Sunday morning f his dismissal by general manager Joe Dumars. He was only in the first year of a two-year contract with the Pistons, after he was hired last summer to help produce a playoff team in Detroit. He finishes with a 21-29 record in Detroit and is now 305-315 in his coaching career.
Unfortunately, firing coaches seems to be a trend for the Pistons, considering how many Pistons head coaches have been fired since Joe Dumars has been the general manager:
From what I saw on Twitter, Pistons point guard Brandon Jennings and forward Charlie Villanueva weren’t informed ahead of time about Cheeks being fired and seem to be shocked to hear the news on Twitter:
Now despite multiple reports by various media outlets, the Pistons have yet to comment on why Cheeks was fired in the middle of the season. Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports did however add that Pistons owner Tom Gores had become increasingly impatient with Cheeks and the young Pistons team:
So it seems for now, we will have to wait to hear more information from the Pistons organization and there is no doubt that plenty of people have questions about this firing.
ESPN’s Marc Stein, even suggested that former Memphis Grizzlies head coach Lionel Hollins could be the one to replace Cheeks:
However for now, it seems like the Pistons won’t be doing any new hiring because assistant coach John Loyer will be interim head coach for the Pistons for the remainder of the season.
