African Immigrant Held For Two Months
Orlando-An African immigrant was arrested and held for two (2) months after being accused of stealing from a local JC Penny store. Oluwatosin “Tosin” Ogunsiji had purchased a bottle of perfume and held the receipt in his hand when he was detained and questioned by store security. Tosin was later arrested and served over two (2) months in jail before a judge threw out the case. Tosin, anan immigrant from Nigeria was forced to hire an immigration attorney to prevent himself from being deported. After spending thousands of dollars to secure his freedom and remain in the United States, Tosin is now suing the store.
“This is a clear case of racial profiling, in light of recent retailers attempts at addressing this practice it’s shameful to see a company like JC Penny still practicing it”, stated Todd Long, Tosin’s attorney. “JC Penny is a sponsor of the U.S. Olympic team, would our African-American athletes receive similar treatment at JC Penny?”
Long has filed a lawsuit in federal court in Orlando seeking the money Tosin was forced to spend on his immigration attorney, lost wages, and compensation for two (2) months in jail.
