A Fruitland Park deputy police chief and a fellow officer have been accused of being members of the Ku Klux Klan in an FBI investigation.
Former Deputy Police Chief David Borst and officer George Hunnewell were named by an FBI source as alleged Klansmen.
According to WFTV, Borst resigned Thursday with more than 20 years on the force and Hunnewell was fired Friday.
Police Chief Terry Isaacs called the allegations “despicable and disgusting.”
The FBI turned the investigation over to the FDLE because it is not criminal to be a member of the KKK, and the FDLE in turn gave the case to Chief Isaacs.
“They’re a good group of people,” the chief said of his officers, reports the Orlando Sentinel. “The last thing I was expecting to hear in the year 2014 was for a professional law enforcement officer to be a member of a subversive organization.”
