Rev. Dr. Dee Dee M. Coleman Makes History as First Female President of the Council of Baptist Pastors of Detroit and Vicinity, Inc.
- Rev. Coleman tobe officially installed as head of the Council
- Rev. Coleman is Pastor at Russell Street Missionary Baptist Church
- The Council will focus on economic growth, incarceration/reentry, PTSD and Detroit’s new drainage and water fees
Although the United States didn’t elect a female president, the Council of Baptist Pastors of Detroit and Vicinity, Inc. certainly did with the election of Rev. Dr. Dee Dee M. Coleman as its first female president. This is an impressive feat considering that female pastors were not allowed membership into the 52-year-old Council until the year 2000.
Rev. Coleman is the 18th President of the Council and will preside for a three-year term. Rev. Coleman is responsible for setting the agenda for the 170 Church memberships of pastoral leaders. The Council was developed on the belief of and the need for the nurturing of pastors and ministers. The Council also exists to offer leadership and voice on social justice issues to the community-at-large.
Rev. Coleman’s focus will be on finding support for returning citizens re-entering society from incarceration, education, job growth in Detroit, extending links with elected officials and leaders, and addressing the new drainage/water charge recently instated on churches and citizens of Detroit by the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department. Prior to being named President of the Council, Coleman served in several positions with the Council, including vice president and secretary. She was one of two women pastors who led a Baptist church in the Detroit area. The other, Dr. Wilma Johnson, died last year.
Rev. Coleman has been the Pastor of Russell Street Missionary Baptist Church – the oldest church on Detroit’s North end – for the last 17 years. In February, Russell Street will celebrate its 101st birthday in February.
