The State Reform/Redesign Office of Michigan has threatened the closure of 38 K-12 schools in June of 2017. 16 of these schools are in the Detroit Public Schools Community District and 8 schools are in the Education Achievement Authority of Michigan.
We the People of Detroit’s Community Research Collective has produced a short documentary that examines the causes and effects of this wave of school closings.
The documentary centers around Timothy Wright–a special education student in Detroit Public Schools. Timothy’s story offers a glimpse into the harrowing consequences of school closings for students with physical disabilities.
New evidence is presented that shows the correlations among income, race and poverty markers, such as water shutoffs. The documentary, along with infographics and maps produced by the collective, will be available online, for public viewing.
