ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The St. Louis County NAACP is deeply concerned regarding video footage that has been released of Michael Brown from inside the Ferguson Market on the tragic day of his death – Aug. 9, 2014.

“The fact that this video is just now being discovered is appalling,” St. Louis County NAACP President Esther Haywood said. “Although the video does not bring Michael Brown back, it does however disprove that Brown was stealing from the local store.”

John Gaskin III, St. Louis native and NAACP national board member, agrees. “Regardless of what was revealed in the video, Michael Brown should have never lost his life,” Gaskin said. “If the video is accurate and valid, it is unfortunate that Brown was portrayed internationally as a ‘thief’ and ‘criminal.’ It remains injudicious that so many men of color are racially profiled on an ongoing basis and far too frequently guilty until proven innocent in the United States’ criminal justice system.”

The St. Louis County NAACP would like to remind the region the importance of peaceful protests.

“It is our hope that the St. Louis and Ferguson communities will continue to heed the difficult lessons learned from  death and the aftermath of the civil unrest,” Haywood said.

Founded in 1909 the NAACP is America’s oldest and largest premiere civil rights organization. The Missouri NAACP has over 15 units across the state that work to move the organization’s civil rights agenda on a grass roots level.
