The Third Circuit Court is offered jurors who failed to appear in 2016 one last chance to rectify that situation before Chief Judge Colombo issues an order to show cause for failing to appear for jury duty. The deadline to contact the court was March 1, 2017. Chief Judge Robert Colombo will hold a formal press conference on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at 10:00 A.M in his chambers located in the Coleman A. Young Building, 2 Woodward, Detroit, MI 48226. to inform those who have not contacted the court and failed to appear a final opportunity to appear before the court for a show cause order.
In 2016, the Court required 62,388 jurors to appear for jury service, and 22,255 jurors failed to report. During the month of February, these jurors were directed to contact the Jury Services Department to schedule a new date to appear and avoid the risk of receiving a show cause order and being fined or jailed. The Court visited various community organizations and also aired a public service announcement on a local radio station to help raise awareness.
“Jury service is the purest form of government because jurors are not subject to political considerations or contributions, but rather decide the case based upon the evidence. Jurors represent the thinking of the community. It is a service that should command the pride and pleasure of every citizen and should not be avoided.” Chief Judge Robert J. Colombo, Jr.
Jurors who have failed to appear should immediately contact the Jury Services Department at (313) 224-5254 or (313) 224-5650.
